The magnitude 5.8 earthquake on August 23, 2011, severely damaged Washington National Cathedral. The building sustained $26 million in damage, including broken and twisted pinnacles, cracked stones and mortar, and displaced stonework in the buttresses. Phase I repairs began in March 2014 and include inspection, cleaning, and repair of the nave ceiling and restoration of the six damaged flying buttresses at the east end of the building. Phase II will require raising at least an additional $16 million to address the buttresses on both sides of the nave and the grand pinnacles atop the central tower.
