Memorial Service for Canon Joe L. Allbritton
The Cathedral honors the life of Joe Allbritton who was installed as an honorary Cathedral canon in 2001. Cathedral Dean Gary Hall and former Cathedral deans Nathan Baxter and Samuel Lloyd will participate in the service.
A longtime advocate of the Cathedral, Allbritton supported the Cathedral financially with gifts for annual programs, construction, and special projects. From 1985 until 2010 the Allbritton Communications Corp. broadcast the Christmas morning Festival Holy Eucharist. The Right Rev. John T. Walker, late Episcopal bishop of Washington, counted Allbritton among his closest advisors.
As a member of the Chapter from 1976 through 1984, Allbritton was instrumental in bringing together the Foundation Finance Committee and corporate leaders during one of the Cathedral’s most critical financial periods. He advised Cathedral deans on development matters and introduced them to community and corporate leaders.
A Mississippi native, Allbritton grew up in Texas and entered the banking business. In the 1970s he moved to Washington and purchased Washington Star Communications, which included television station WJLA. The station became the flagship of Allbritton Communications Corp. Allbritton also served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Riggs National Corporation and Riggs Bank N.A., having purchased a controlling interest in the company’s stock in 1981.
