Counterfeit Gods
Where do you turn when the people and things you thought most important fail you? How do you respond to sudden changes in career, wealth, esteem, or relationships?
Many of us are asking such questions in the current economic crisis. Tim Keller, one of America’s most popular Christian authors and most vibrant church leaders, believes the crisis offers a unique opportunity to re-evaluate our lives, our priorities, and our faith.
In his new book, Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters, Keller argues that the global economic shake-up has revealed the hollowness of our traditional notions of success, imbedded in career, wealth, and power, and points to the Gospel message as the answer to the fearfulness and disenchantment that marks so much of our contemporary culture.
Join Tim Keller and Washington National Cathedral Dean Sam Lloyd as they explore the notion of “counterfeit gods,” how we have become entrapped by false notions of security and success, and where the answers are on the road ahead. This evening event will include a 30-minute book presentation by Keller, followed by a public conversation between Keller and Dean Lloyd, and a book signing.
The Rev. Timothy Keller is founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. Started in 1989, Redeemer now has more than 5,000 regular Sunday attendees, plus members of over 100 new churches organized through Redeemer around the world. Keller is also the author of The Prodigal God, the New York Times bestseller The Reason for God, and Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power, and the Only Hope that Matters forthcoming in October.
