Afghanistan and Pakistan: America's Challenge: Solving the Impossible

Event image

Join us for an examination of the issues surrounding Afghanistan and Pakistan, which confound even the most thoughtful of observers. Panelists representing a breadth of perspectives address critical issues such as: How much are these nations at risk? How can political, religious, and other leaders best contribute to fixing the problems? Can outside powers make a difference? What’s the risk of deep involvement in the area—and what’s the risk of staying out?

Panelists

  • The Hon. John Kerry (D-Mass.), chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and former presidential candidate
  • Husain Haqqani, Pakistan ambassador to the United States
  • Rory Stewart, journalist and author of one of the New York Times 10 Best books of 2006, The Places In Between, which chronicles his walk across Afghanistan: surviving by his wits, his knowledge of Persian dialects and Muslim customs, and the kindness of strangers
  • Moderated by Adi Ignatius, editor-in-chief of the Harvard Business Review

The 2009 Ignatius Program follows in the tradition set by last year’s inaugural program, “American and the World: Picking Up the Pieces,” which featured Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft along with moderator David Ignatius. Learn about last year’s inaugural program »

The event is supported by the Nancy and Paul Ignatius Program Fund, which was established by their children, friends, and other relatives in recognition of Nancy and Paul’s service and commitment to Washington national Cathedral—and the inspiration they have given to so many to “focus on things that matter.” The fund helps support this annual program on issues of importance at the intersection of faith and public life.
