Focus: The Importance of Family Literacy
Speaker: Nicole Lubar, Education Director, Washington Literacy Council

Nicole has more than 13 years of experience teaching children, teens and adults who struggle with reading. She is trained and certified in many reading systems, including the Wilson Reading System. In her work with the Washington Literacy Council, she trains volunteers as tutors or small group instructors and provides ongoing support as they work with their students. She also conducts student assessments and places students in curriculum and classes that best address their individual needs. She will complete an education master of science in reading at Johns Hopkins University in December of this year.

Nicole will describe the work of the Washington Literacy Council and specifically the Council’s Family Literacy Program, which meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Payne Elementary School and the first Saturday at the Council offices. She will talk about the need for volunteers in both the Council’s adult and family programs and the training provided.
