Looking to give yourself the gift of spiritual renewal in the New Year? Do you yearn to make sense of your own faith in a post modern, post Christian world? Then come join Dean Sam Lloyd and other Cathedral congregants in January as we delve into the depth and beauty of the Christian faith, engaging our faith traditions and exploring its relevance for our lives. We will be reminded that Jesus came not so much to give us a set of ideas as he came to give us a joyful, hopeful way to live. DOCC aims to help the 21st century searcher find a grace-filled way through our world.

DOCC provided me a sacred space in which to connect at a deeper level with my God, with my fellow pilgrims, and with my inner true self.

DOCC was a phenomenal experience for me. It brought me back from a decade long break with organized religion, introduced me to a congregation where I felt at home and put me on a path that led to my confirmation on Nov. 7.

Participating in DOCC deepened my appreciation for the true meaning of a Christian life and strengthened my feeling of being part of a vibrant living congregation at the Cathedral. It was a wonderful experience!

DOCC came just in time for me. After years of raising a family, nurturing friendships, and managing a demanding career, I realized that I needed more. I needed spiritual nourishment but didn’t know exactly how to get it. DOCC opened the path for me to find that spiritual sustenance. It taught me to pay attention to my relationship with God, my family, my community and my world. It was the beacon of light that I was seeking.

I grew spiritually and gained some lasting friendships. The lectures were stimulating and the group discussions gave me new perspectives for understanding the Scriptures. I would highly recommend the DOCC program to those seeking a deeper Spiritual life!

I grew up in a Catholic-school uniform, but never really felt at home in the faith community of my childhood. DOCC came along at precisely the right time in my life. Although it is a Christian course both in name and in nature, its lessons are universal. The message is one of acceptance and affection, rather than exclusion or condescension. You may find answers to the questions you’ve been pondering—or perhaps new questions altogether.

I gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian. DOCC helped me to recognize past spiritual milestones that changed the way I perceived my past. The opportunity to develop a sense of community with a diverse group of people was wonderful and many of these relationships continue more than two years later.

A deeply rich and moving course which centered and grounded me in my Christian faith more than ever. I’m retaking the course after two years and a successful stem cell transplant to celebrate and direct me in my new life.

DOCC deepens your spiritual awareness and simultaneously connects you with the Cathedral Congregation.

This may sound simple but it is from the heart. The class contributed to my spiritual development and understanding of my relationship with God and others. I benefited from the opportunity to both hear the lecture in the first hour and discuss its implications in my small group during the second hour. In addition, it gave me an opportunity to get to know some of the members of the congregation beyond Sunday morning greetings.

It has been a truly transformative element of my spiritual journey. I was able to fully experience what Christian community is and learn how much God truly loves me. It has inspired me to share the magnificent love and grace that I experienced in the most practical and yet magical ways.

What is DOCC?

Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) is a congregation-based Christian formation program for adults that builds community while encouraging individual spiritual growth. In 2010, DOCC will be offered Tuesdays, January 19–May 4, 7–9 pm. In addition, there will be a Saturday meeting on February 6, 8:30 am–3 pm. Each session contains two parts. The first part is a presentation led by Sam Lloyd, followed by a hour-long response in small groups. These are led by trained facilitators.

When DOCC works, it is because the small groups work, each becoming what we call in DOCC “the church in minuscule.”

“DOCC offers a step-by-step journey into the heart and soul of Christianity along with a community of fellow-explorers to travel with.”

—The Very Rev. Samuel T. Lloyd III
Dean, Washington National Cathedral
