Back to Press Releases »

The Reverend Canon Eugene Taylor Sutton, canon pastor at Washington National Cathedral and director of the Cathedral Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage, was elected the 14th Bishop of Maryland on the first ballot cast by the electing convention on Saturday, March 29, 2008. He will be ordained and consecrated bishop by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and all Bishops of The Episcopal Church present at 11 am on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Washington National Cathedral.

Canon Sutton will remain with the Cathedral until June 1. While his departure will be a great loss for the Cathedral, his election is wonderful news for the Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Maryland. Canon Sutton was elected on the first ballot by an overwhelming margin in both lay and clerical votes; this rarely happens in such church proceedings and is a tribute to the support and enthusiasm the people of Maryland have for his leadership, gracious spirit and compassion. Please offer him your congratulations, and keep him in your prayers in this time of transition. You may read more about the election of Canon Sutton as 14th Bishop of Maryland at the website of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland.
