Reach the Highest Point in D.C.

Back to Press Releases »

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Open to the public for one day only, Washington National Cathedral’s central tower tour will take participants to dizzying heights—30 stories above ground offering the best views of the city.

Climbers see carillon and peal bells during the tour, a rare sight since the Cathedral is the only place in North America that houses both kinds of bells. A demonstration of the bells is included. The tour is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, beginning at 9:30 am. Participants must be at least 48” tall; no large bags or backpacks are permitted. Tickets cost $10 per person and can be purchased through the website, http://tickets.cathedral.org. Please call (202) 537-3119 with questions about the tower climb.

Washington National Cathedral is the sixth largest cathedral in the world and the second largest in the United States. Its central tower is 676 feet above sea level, making its top the highest point in the District of Columbia. The tower overlooks one of the few old growth forests still standing in the nation’s capital, Olmsted Woods, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.

The Cathedral is also the final resting place of the only U.S. president buried in the District—President Woodrow Wilson.
