African-American Singing and Dance Groups Unite with the Godfather of Go-Go to Celebrate the Legacy of Dr. King at National Cathedral

Back to Press Releases »

On January 18 people from all walks of life will come together to sing, dance, and celebrate the legacy of faith and service left by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

D.C.’s own Chuck Brown, “the godfather of go-go” music, will lead the celebration as master of ceremony at Washington National Cathedral, the site of Dr. King’s last Sunday sermon.

Joining Chuck Brown will be other performing artists including the African Heritage Dancers and Drummers, a D.C.-based youth group that recently performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center; the Heritage Signature Chorale, singers dedicated to preserving the Negro Spiritual; Urban H.I.P.-H.O.P Choir, youth singers targeting “Hope, Integrity, Power-Helping Our People;” and City Dance Early Arts at Trinidad Recreation Center, youth dancers.

Short interfaith reflections will be offered in several faith traditions by Buddhist, Jewish, and Christian participants during the program.

The celebration is free and open to the public. The celebration runs 2-4 pm.
