In Praise of Doubt with Sociologist Peter Berger

Back to Press Releases »

What role do doubt and uncertainty play in religious conviction? Can one hold doubts and still be faithful? Do secularists and fundamentalists have something in common?

Join Dean Sam Lloyd and sociologist Peter Berger as they explore the complex relationship among faith, doubt, fundamentalism, and secularism on Sunday, January 17, at Washington National Cathedral.

The Sunday Forum is a 50-minute conversation that examines the intersection of faith and public life, and includes questions from live and online audiences. It is held between morning services in the main part of the Cathedral, beginning at 10:10, on most Sundays.

Peter Berger is an internationally renowned sociologist and faculty member at Boston University, where in 1985 he founded its Institute of Culture, Religion, and World Affairs. He is author of many books, among them The Social Construction of Reality, The Homeless Mind, and Questions of Faith. His latest book is In Praise of Doubt: How to Have Convictions Without Becoming a Fanatic.

The Sunday Forum is free, open to the public and webcast live at www.nationalcathedral.org. Complimentary parking is offered in the underground parking garage, accessed from Wisconsin Avenue.
