A Word from the Provost

Boggs

In the two weeks that I have been your new provost, I have heard two things again and again from the Cathedral Congregation. “Welcome!” and “What is a provost?” I thought I’d use this short note to respond to both.

Thank you for the warmest of welcomes. The faithful caring and generous joy that you have developed as your congregational style have spilled over onto me, and I thank you for that. I am truly thrilled to be serving with you in our cathedral community. With some trepidation and on just my fourth day here, I stepped up into the Canterbury pulpit for the first time, and my butterflies were calmed by knowing already your graciousness and good cheer. Your warm faces made this preacher feel right at home. And that experience has been echoed each day. I am so grateful.

The ancient title of provost comes from Old Latin and Middle English and has been used in many settings to designate someone who has been given responsibility to both lead and to follow the lead of others. In medieval times a provost was often the chief assistant to the abbot of a monastery.

Well, we don’t have an abbot, but we do have a dean and a COO and a Chapter and a Congregation Committee. And in our Cathedral of today we understand a provost to be a useful partner to them all. A partner in pursuing the mission, ministry, and worship with the same excellence, care, and faithfulness that God calls us all to pursue our ministries.

In my many months of conversation with Sam Lloyd and Kathleen Cox, and also with my good friend Steve Huber, I began to understand that there was a happy congruence between the gifts I could bring and the needs of the Cathedral community. A clarity developed on all our parts that I just might be that useful partner, called to help move us onto a sustainable track of growth and engagement. This partnership will include your new vicar to be called in the months ahead.

It is my view that the Cathedral Congregation, in its worship, fellowship, stewardship, and outreach, is at the heart of the life and future of this great cathedral. As a priest and a leader and a follower as well, I look forward to making that journey with you.

Summer Congregation Connections

PHoto

Dean Lloyd and 75 members launched our Summer Connections series on July 11 with a spirited conversation entitled “What on Earth Is God Doing?” The dean laid out some intriguing comparisons between established and intentional congregations and identified ten shifts for a 21st century church. For him, what is happening in our congregation could and should be happening in the broader church. Provocative questions followed. If you missed this session, stay tuned; his overview may very well become a mini-series in the fall to alternate with Forum speakers and other programs currently being considered.

The genesis of the series emerged out of a June Congregation Committee discussion on ways to promote interaction and build community during this time of transition. Every week, during the “Sunday Forum spot” of 10:10–11:00 am, we’ll explore a different aspect of the Cathedral community with a lively program that promises to give you an opportunity to get to know others in the Cathedral. So come as often as you are able and plan to sit next to someone new each time. For details and the complete schedule, visit the congregation homepage »

Editor’s note: A schedule change became necessary after the e-blast was sent out last week. The schedules in the calendar sidebar, service leaflet, and on the website are current and accurate.

We are seeking a few volunteers to set up the room and open the Summer Connections series for the Sundays in August. Reply at connections@cathedral.org.

Path to Ministry for Rebecca Myers

Myers

You may recall that three of our members have been in discernment for the priesthood. On June 17, Rebecca Myers reached the next milestone in her journey when she became officially a Postulant for Holy Orders. She took her first step in the summer of 2006 when she stopped fighting a call that seemed to emanate from Mark 6:7–13. Read more »

Vicar Search Update

Since February, the Search Committee has been meeting with candidates for our next vicar. The process has been graced but also labor intensive; it takes time to get to know someone! We are blest to have so many gifted, inspiring people who are attracted to the Cathedral Congregation.

While we have candidates with whom we are continuing the conversation about this call, the Search Committee has decided to broaden its search, widening the net to include clergy from all over the country. This will lengthen the search process but we feel the effort will be worth it. We have set early August as a deadline for these additional applications.

Like you, we are eager to call our new vicar. Please pray with us that the Holy Spirit will guide our efforts and again bring the Cathedral Congregation dynamic, compassionate leadership.

Vicar Search Committtee: Steve Beam, Rich Bland, Tim Boggs, Ginny Bradford, Julie Colllins (chair), Lynn Harris, Carleton Jones, Sam Lloyd, Eric Motley, Nancy Stockbridge, Tom Van Alen.
