Ordinary Time

The Season of Pentecost

Following the arrival of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles on the Day of Pentecost, the Church began to grow and spread Christ’s message to the world. This season culminates just before Advent on the Reign of Christ Sunday.

a.k.a. Ordinary Time

Welcome to Ordinary Time. This season, the longest in the church year, officially began after Pentecost Sunday and continues through the feast of the Reign of Christ, which falls on November 22 in 2009. “Ordinary” time does not suggest a boring or uneventful period, but derives from the word ordinal which means counted time. The church designates each Sunday in this season as counted time in relation to Pentecost. Ordinary Time invites us to move into a mode that is shaped by something other than the “high seasons,” which the first half of the liturgical year offers us. During this time, we have the opportunity to find the sacred in its subtlety and be molded by the dynamic mystery of Christ in all its aspects. In celebration of our faithful God who is active in the very midst of our everyday lives and in gratitude for God’s work with us and through us, we gather in worship each day.

Parking at the Cathedral
